Lake Toba fills the caldera of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the planet's history, and Samosir — an island almost the size of Singapore — floats at its centre. This is the Batak heartland: boat-shaped houses, stone chairs where village disputes were settled, and water warm enough to swim in every afternoon.

Samosir Island and Tuk Tuk

Almost everyone stays on the Tuk Tuk peninsula, a small strip of lakeside guest houses and cafés you can circle by scooter or bicycle in a day. Days here are deliberately empty: swim off a jetty, ride to the hot springs and viewpoints on the western side, and watch the light change over the caldera walls.

Batak heritage: Tomok and Ambarita

In Tomok you can visit the stone sarcophagus of King Sidabutar and the traditional houses along the market lane. Ambarita holds the famous stone chairs and execution table used by the Batak kings. Both are short rides from Tuk Tuk and are best with a guide who can explain the symbols carved into each house.

Getting to Lake Toba

From Berastagi the drive south passes Sipiso-piso waterfall and reaches Parapat in around four hours, where a ferry crosses to Samosir in about 45 minutes. From Medan allow five to six hours by road plus the ferry. Our Grand Tour and Paradise Tour both include the transfer and the crossing.

LAKE TOBA QUESTIONS

Can you swim in Lake Toba?: Yes. The water is fresh, deep and comfortably warm, and most guest houses on Tuk Tuk have their own jetty or steps into the lake.
How many days do I need at Lake Toba?: Two nights is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile; three lets you see Tomok and Ambarita, ride around the island and still have a genuinely lazy day.
How do I get from Parapat to Samosir?: Passenger ferries run between Parapat and Tuk Tuk through the day and take around 45 minutes. On our tours the driver drops you at the pier and your accommodation is arranged on the island side.
Is Lake Toba worth adding to a jungle trip?: If you have eight days or more, yes — it is the natural counterweight to the jungle and the volcano. On a shorter trip we would rather keep you in Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan than spend two days driving.
