BERASTAGI VOLCANOES & KARO HIGHLANDS
Two hours up from the coastal heat, Berastagi sits at around 1,300 metres between two volcanoes: dormant Mount Sibayak, which you can climb, and Mount Sinabung, which still smokes on the skyline. The air is cool, the markets overflow with passion fruit and marquisa, and the surrounding Karo Batak villages keep their tall traditional houses.
Climbing Mount Sibayak
The classic Sibayak hike starts before dawn so you reach the crater rim for sunrise, with steaming sulphur vents, yellow rock and a view over the highlands. It takes roughly two to three hours up and less coming down, and finishes at the hot springs at the foot of the mountain.
Karo Batak culture and markets
Berastagi's fruit market is the everyday heart of the town, and nearby villages such as Lingga still have traditional Karo houses with soaring roofs. Sipiso-piso waterfall, dropping 120 metres into the northern end of the Lake Toba caldera, is an easy add-on on the way south.

- Do I need experience to hike Mount Sibayak?
- No. Sibayak is a walk rather than a climb, on a path with some rocky sections. Any reasonably fit person can do it with a guide and a head torch for the dark start.
- Is Mount Sinabung safe to visit?
- Sinabung is an active volcano and is closed to climbers. You see it from a safe distance around Berastagi, which is where the classic view of its smoking cone comes from.
- How cold does Berastagi get?
- Nights can drop to around 15°C and the pre-dawn crater is windy, so bring a fleece or light jacket even if the rest of your trip is tropical.
- How long should I stay in Berastagi?
- One night is enough for the sunrise hike and the hot springs. Two nights let you add Sipiso-piso waterfall and the Karo villages without rushing.
