Where the Batang Serangan and Buluh rivers meet, Tangkahan is the quietest corner of Gunung Leuser most travellers never reach. It is home to the Conservation Response Unit, where a small team of mahouts and rescued Sumatran elephants patrol the park boundary against illegal logging — and where visitors can meet the elephants without any riding or performance.
Meeting the elephants, the right way
Mornings at the CRU are simple: you walk down to the river with the mahouts, help wash the elephants in the current and feed them. There are no shows and no chairs strapped to backs — the entrance and washing fees go directly into the conservation unit that keeps these animals and their patrol work funded.
Rivers, hot springs and jungle walks
Beyond the elephants, Tangkahan is a place to slow down. Float down the river on an inner tube, walk to the hot springs where warm water runs into the cold river, or take a short guided forest walk looking for gibbons and hornbills along the park's edge.
Combining Tangkahan with Bukit Lawang
Tangkahan is around three hours by road from Bukit Lawang, so most travellers pair the two. Our Jungle & Elephants Combo spends the first days trekking for orangutans and the last in Tangkahan, and you can add a night at Mega Inn in Tangkahan rather than driving back the same day.

TANGKAHAN QUESTIONS
- Is elephant riding offered in Tangkahan?
- We do not include or promote elephant riding. Our visits are built around washing and feeding the elephants with their mahouts at the Conservation Response Unit.
- How do I get to Tangkahan?
- By private car it is roughly three hours from Bukit Lawang and four to five hours from Medan. The last stretch is a rough track, so a driver who knows the route matters.
- Can Tangkahan be done as a day trip?
- It can from Bukit Lawang, but it makes for a long day. Staying one night in Tangkahan gives you the quiet early morning at the river, which is the best part.
- Is Tangkahan suitable for families with children?
- Yes. The river activities and elephant washing are gentle and there is no hard trekking involved, which makes it one of the easiest wildlife days in North Sumatra.
